On our skin, there is tiny holes called follicles. When the follicles are clogged up by oil, dead cells, dirt and bacteria, pimples or acne will develop. Acne is very common especially among the adolescents. While it is harmless, it can be painful and cause permanent scarring. It is known that acne on the face and other body parts can cause significant emotional stress, anxiety and even depression. Please bear in mind that acne and acne scarring conditions are very treatable and we are ready to help you.
Science has yet to fully understand acne but here are some of the ideas:
- hereditary
- bacteria
- Intrinsic immune activation
- internal and external androgenic hormones
- distension and occlusion of the follicles
These are some of the well known aggravating factors:
– polycystic ovarian syndrome
– drugs: steroids, hormones, anticonvulsants
– occlusive skincare and cosmetics
– high humidity
– poor sleep and stress
– Diet high in dairy products, high glycaemic foods ie. cheese, milk, yoghurt, cake, candies
When acne is not inflammed, it’s called commedones (black and white heads). There are several types of acne depending on severity. The higher the degree of inflammation, the more likely it is to leave a permanent scar. Hence, early control especially knowing the basics on lifestyle changes is important. Proven effective treatment include:
- non-commedogenic skincare
- topical medications – benzoyl peroxide, tretinoin, adapalene, clindamycin
- oral medications – antibiotic, isotretinoin
- chemical peeling – salicylic acid, glycolic acid
- microdermabrasion
- laser therapy
- photodynamic therapy
- intralesional cortisone injection
