The Urbanites
For Urbanites
What is there not to like living in a vibrant city like KL? One can enjoy a cuppa at chic cafe or indulge in exclusive gastronomic delights at no fuss. Shopping is a bliss with numerous malls around. Life is colorful living in a multicultural society.
While there’re perks living in the metropolis, there’re some downsides too. High population density means heavy traffic and noise pollution. This can take a serious toll on mental health such as anxiety, anger management and post-traumatic stress disorder. Bright light around the city and long hours spent in front of the OLED screen slowly chip away quality rest with insomnia and day time somnolence. Studies have found these environmental hazards to predispose city dwellers to having psychological issues such as depression and bipolar disorder. Furthermore, the unavoidable peer pressure and fear of stigmatization makes it hard for urbanites to express their struggles in the city. Hence, they become lonelier than the older generations. Millennials often burnt out because of “errand paralysis” depicted by Anne Helen Peterson in Buzzfeed which makes them think that they should always be working but the older generations think of them as the “tofu” generation who are weak and irresponsible. It’s not hard to fathom why suicidal rate among the millennials is rising in the most developed cities!
